2013

Background Direct cholangioscopy (DC) with ultraslim endoscopes and free-hand cannulation of the common bile duct (CBD) is a promising technique for evaluating and treating cholangiopathy. However, its safety and success rates are as yet unclear. Objective To evaluate the overall success rates and adverse events with the procedure. Design Single-center, prospective cohort study; 12 patients retrospectively enrolled. Setting Academic tertiary referral center. Patients A total of 100 DC procedures in 84 patients with biliary disease were evaluated prospectively. Interventions DC performed with the patient under conscious sedation. Main Outcome Measurements Overall success rates and adverse ev…

Echocardiographic reference ranges for normal non-invasive myocardial work indices: results from the EACVI NORRE study

2019

International audience; Aims - To obtain the normal ranges for 2D echocardiographic (2DE) indices of myocardial work (MW) from a large group of healthy volunteers over a wide range of ages and gender. Methods and results - A total of 226 (85 men, mean age: 45 ± 13 years) healthy subjects were enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study. Global work index (GWI), global constructive work (GCW), global work waste (GWW), and global work efficiency (GWE) were estimated from left ventricle (LV) pressure-strain loops. Peak LV systolic pressure was non-invasively derived from brachial artery cuff pressure. The lowest values of MW indic…

Schirmer test results: are they associated with topical or systemic medication?

2018

To test whether Schirmer test (ST) results are associated with topical or systemic medication and to evaluate the distribution of tear fluid quantity in a 3-min and 5-min ST.The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based, prospective, observational cohort study in Germany. ST was assessed in a sub-cohort of 1,999 participants. ST was performed under topical anesthesia for 5 min (ST-5) or of 3 min (ST-3). Anthropometric factors, systemic diseases, use of systemic and eye medications were recorded. We used multivariable quantile regression analysis to assess the influence on ST measurements. The length of wetting of the Schirmer strips for ST-5 was 23.2 ± 9.31 mm for right and 22.9 ± 9.0 mm …

A comparison of the effects for sustained versus shifted attention on dichotic listening performance.

2009

We measured the effect of two types of directed attention instructions, sustained by a verbal cue or shifted by a tone cue with different time intervals (150, 450, and 750 ms), on a consonant-vowel dichotic listening (C-V DL) test for a large group of right- and left-handed participants of both sexes. An increasing of the hits and a decreasing of the intrusions from the baseline DL test scores was evident for both types of attentional manipulations, with no differences regarding sex or handedness. Increasing the time from 150 to 450 ms benefited the focusing of attention but this advantage was markedly attenuated at the longer 750-ms interval. The improving effect was seen for the hits of b…

Prognostic factors in a large multi-institutional series of papillary renal cell carcinoma.

2011

OBJECTIVES To investigate cancer-related outcomes and prognostic factors of papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) in a large multicentre data set. Oncological outcome and prognostic factors of pRCC have been limitedly evaluated in comparison with the most common RCC subtype, clear cell RCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS From a multicentre retrospective database, including 5463 patients who were surgically treated for RCC at 16 Italian academic centres between 1995 and 2007, 577 patients with pRCC were identified. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models were performed to identify prognostic factors predictive of recurrence-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) after surge…

Export Barriers and Strategic Grouping

2007

Abstract The purpose of our work is to investigate the export strategy of international business by explicitly comparing exporting firms with non-exporting ones. This task has been undertaken by having recourse to a very large sample with more than 55,000 registered Spanish enterprises from all commercial sectors. Using this sample, we try to demonstrate that exporters and non-exporters belong to different strategic groups, with different profit levels. The existence of three kinds of barriers (managerial, organisational and external) constrains migration of non-exporting enterprises to the exporting group. However, the conclusions herein presented point at some ways of avoiding these barri…

Design of a multifunctionalizable BODIPY platform for the facile elaboration of a large series of gold(i)-based optical theranostics.

2018

A simple trifunctional BODIPY platform was designed. The high potential of this platform was validated via the elaboration of twelve optical theranostics. More specifically, we reported on the synthesis, the characterization, the photophysical properties, and the evaluation of the hydrophilicity properties of the different BODIPY derivatives, as well as a theoretical rationalization of the intriguing chemical behavior of some of them. The antiproliferative evaluation and confocal imaging of the different compounds in three human and murine cancer cell lines were performed and analysed, along with the measurement of gold(I) uptake in one cancer cell line via ICP-MS.

Synthesis of Au-CdS@CdSe Hybrid Nanoparticles with a Highly Reactive Gold Domain.

2017

We propose a novel route to synthesize semiconductor–gold hybrid nanoparticles directly in water, resulting in much larger gold domains than previous protocols (up to 50 nm) with very reactive surfaces which allow further functionalization. This method advances the possibility of self-assembly into complex structures with catalytic activity toward the reduction of nitro compounds by hydrides. The large size of these gold domains in hybrid particles supports efficient light scattering at the plasmon resonance frequency, making such structures attractive for single-particle studies.

Influence of Plastic Deformation on the Corrosion Behaviour of As-Cast AlMg2 and AlCu4Mg1 Aluminium Alloys in NaCl Solution

2015

The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion behavior of as-cast AlMg2 and AlCu4Mg1 aluminum alloys was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique and surface microgauges. It was shown that large strain gradients develop locally. The corrosion behavior of both alloys was affected by plastic deformation. The most active sites contain large strain gradients in AlMg2 and cracks with damage in the matrix in AlCu4Mg1.

A fast 3D dual boundary element method based on hierarchical matrices

2008

AbstractIn this paper a fast solver for three-dimensional BEM and DBEM is developed. The technique is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix and uses a preconditioned GMRES for the solution of the algebraic system of equations. The preconditioner is built exploiting the hierarchical arithmetic and taking full advantage of the hierarchical format. Special algorithms are developed to deal with crack problems within the context of DBEM. The structure of DBEM matrices has been efficiently exploited and it has been demonstrated that, since the cracks form only small parts of the whole structure, the use of hierarchical matrices can be particula…
